The Challenges of Holidays

Memorial Day isn't a happy day for everyone. For some of the people on your team, today carries real weight. This can include a lost friend, a fallen family member, a grief that doesn't take holidays just because the calendar says it should. And while the world fills up with barbecues and long weekends and cheerful "enjoy the holiday!" messages, those people are quietly navigating something that doesn't have a neat place to put it.

If you lead people, here's a gentle reminder: you don't have to do anything elaborate. A simple check-in (not with an agenda, just with presence) can mean more than you know. Trauma-informed leadership isn't a framework you only apply during work hours. It's a posture, one that recognizes the people on your team carry full lives and full histories, and sometimes, a heart full of loss that has nothing to do with a project deadline.

To anyone for whom today is hard: you don't have to perform joy. Your grief is valid, your memories matter, and you are not alone.
